VOLUNTEER

We can't do what we do without volunteers!

The primary mission of the Rockport-Fulton Good Samaritans is to provide short-term assistance to families and individuals in Aransas County who have emergency needs for food, shelter, utilities, medicine, clothing, and transportation.  We are staffed completely by volunteers.  Our bookkeeper and technology consultant are contracted for administrative purposes, but the staff operating Good Samaritans on a day-to-day basis is all volunteers.

There are many varying opportunities for you to use your individual skill set to make a difference in Aransas County.  Volunteers can commit to as much time as they have available - once a week, twice a month, or as much or as little time as you are willing to donate.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The receptionist manages the front desk, greeting clients and answering the phone.  Clients are checked in and information verified before passing the client to an interviewer for assistance.  Phone calls are handled by answering questions or routing the call to other volunteers.  The position requires organizational skills, patience, and compassion.  A computer is used to access and edit client information, and scanning of documents is required.

Interviewers work directly with clients, either face-to-face or on the phone, giving assistance according to their needs.  This involves soliciting information from the client to better understand their economic situation, listening to the request for aid, and offering assistance based on the established guidelines.  Interviewers also coordinate additional assistance with other agencies.  The position requires patience, compassion, and attention to detail.  A computer is used to enter information and some copying is necessary.

Pantry workers facilitate the distribution of food to clients.  They work in teams to sort donations and put them on the selves for use in the pantry.  The distribution process involves selecting food from the shelves, packing it into boxes, and taking it outside to waiting clients.  Pantry workers stand and do light lifting during their shifts.

The Morning Pickup team works in the morning before Good Samaritans opens.  They pickup food donations at HEB/Walmart and deliver them to the Good Samaritans Center.  This requires a vehicle that will accommodate the merchandise and some heavy lifting.

Food Sorters also work in the early morning.  They accept the food from the Pickup Team and organize/shelve the donated goods, preparing the pantry before the Good Samaritans Center opens at 10:00.  Standing, walking, and light-lifting are required.

If you don't see anything that interests you, let us know how you would like to help.  There is a place for everyone.
